WoW.com: How do you schedule your playtime? Do you try and work during &#8220;good times to queue?&#8221; Is this different now than in previous seasons?<br />
Celestior: Haha, We haven&#8217;t really played at all this season. We literally only play one of two times a week, and only ten games per week. Sunday night or Monday night, because it&#8217;s impossible to get all 5 of us on at the same time. Many times, this doesn&#8217;t work out either, although we try our best so we get points for the week.<br />
We would love to queue at &#8220;peak&#8221; times, but it doesn&#8217;t really work out with school, work, going out, etc. We&#8217;ve still been able to hold first for the majority of the season though once we got Filovirus back.<br />
WoW.com: What signals to you that you need to radically change strategy midmatch? (And how do you accomplish that change?)<br />
Celestior: It&#8217;s pretty easy to tell when a target isn&#8217;t dying. Even with 4 dps, if they pain suppress the target and have sacrifice up on a shield walled warrior, there&#8217;s obviously no reason to continue bursting him. The power of the composition lies in our ability to rapidly swap targets and instagib them. It&#8217;s roughly the same concept as PMRLS, except PMRLS purges swap targets while we just unload heavier burst into it.<br />
WoW.com: What&#8217;s the key for your composition&#8217;s strategy? Are there multiple tactics you can use?<br />
Celestior: The key for our compositions strategy is unhealable burst combined with spammable cc and ridiculous swapping ability.<br />
On a triple DPS team, if the other team chooses to train a DPS. it locks down a significant portion of your damage. Generally speaking, our enemies choose to zerg our shaman down. That&#8217;s great and all, except that leaves a Destro lock, Frost mage, and a rogue freecasting into one of your teammates while our shaman can still toss out a lava burst into the target if he gets a second of breathing room. There&#8217;s no good way to &#8220;lock down&#8221; our damage, so surviving our burst depends on how capable your healers are at coordinating the use of their cooldowns.<br />
WoW.com: What are you trying to improve?<br />
Celestior: Nothing in particular, but there&#8217;s always room for improvement. By now, I know all the &#8220;tricks&#8221; of being a mage, but matters of situational awareness can always be improved upon. I&#8217;m sure there have been times when I used Counterspell on a healer instead of stopping a cast that killed a member of my team, or used it to stop opposing burst instead of CSing a heal that would have guaranteed a kill. It&#8217;s just the kind of thing that can only be improved by playing more. WoW.com: What motivates you to keep playing?<br />
Celestior: I think every arena player eventually gets bored and wants to pursue other things. However, I think one of the biggest motivators for me to keep playing is the trashtalk that runs rampant among the arena community. Everyone thinks they&#8217;re the greatest player, and I think the Arena Junkies forums uses the word &#8220;bad&#8221; more than anywhere else on the web. If it wasn&#8217;t for the rivalries and incessant tells from level 1 alts telling me how much of a &#8220;expletive&#8221; I am, I think I&#8217;d be bored of the game by now. Mal&#8217;ganis is a very active server pvp wise, and I&#8217;m glad I made the move here.<br />
WoW.com: What&#8217;s the biggest thing that differentiates a good player from a great player?<br />
Celestior: In all honesty, it&#8217;s positioning. Even low 2k players usually have a relatively firm grasp of their class&#8217;s mechanics. It&#8217;s not hard to pull off your optimal damage rotation, or to know who to CC and when. However, it&#8217;s very easy to differentiate a good player from a great player when you watch their positioning.<br />
A great player will make you work hard to CC them, get out of LoS instantly before they see their healer even get CC&#8217;d, force you out into the open if you want to get a kill, etc. Average players will know when to use their skills, but they&#8217;ll constantly be standing out in the open and be easily CC&#8217;d or swapped to. A great player won&#8217;t leave the pillars unless they know they have some kind of cooldown up to break out of CC.</p>

All of the recent discussion surrounding what people are planning for their Worgen and Goblin characters got me to thinking about the ingame races that just don&#8217;t get that kind of love. It&#8217;s no secret that certain race/class combinations are underplayed (witness, for example, the ingame hell of finding a Dwarf or Orc rogue for Turkey Lurkey), but some races are just massively underplayed, period. If Warcraft Realms is at least ballpark accurate, then Humans are roughly 5 times as popular as Gnomes, Dwarves, and Trolls at 80. Draenei are twice as popular at 80 as Gnomes and Dwarves, and Blood Elves have a chokehold on the Hordeside population. Zardoz&#8217;s Armory Data Mining (fast becoming one of my favorite WoW sites) did a breakdown on class, race, and gender populations as of November 4th, and the results are pretty illuminating. In case you&#8217;re wondering, Dwarves, Orcs, and Tauren are the least likely to be female, and Draenei, Blood Elves, and Night Elves the most likely (although Draenei are the only race in the game to have a female majority). The most played combination in the game is the Blood Elf paladin, and the least-played are the Dwarf rogue (I for one am shocked) and the Troll warrior. ONE WINTER a Farmer aion leveling found a Snake stiff and cheap wow gold frozen with cold. So my question is &#8212; if you don&#8217;t play an underplayed race/sex combo, why don&#8217;t you play them? For me, the breaker is usually the animations; a lot of the animations on the more underplayed race/sex combinations are just grindingly dull. The male Tauren warrior, for example (a hugely popular combination) always seems very dynamic, smashing their shields into someone&#8217;s face with a great slashing special attack. The female Troll warrior, by contrast (a hugely unpopular combination), just kind of&#8230;ineffectually pokes at things. I tried to play one for a bit and finally shelved her just because it didn&#8217;t feel like she was actually doing anything. Then again, I also have a huge herd of female Tauren characters, who are just as unpopular and have an incredibly boring casting animation, so I could be completely off-base. However, it does seem like there are consistent patterns to what most people are willing to play, and I&#8217;m curious to hear why people don&#8217;t like the less-popular combinations.</p>

Eye of the Storm is a Battleground that combines the resource accumulation mechanic of Arathi Basin with the flag capture aspect of Warsong Gulch. The map accommodates 15 players per faction in a game where the goal is to accrue 1600 resource points, or Victory Points as noted on the counter at the top of your screen. The accumulation of resources is dependent on the capture and control of points of interest on the map as well as the capture of the flag, which is located on the center of the map.<br />
Taking the flag is a 10-second channeled action and players cannot ride a mount without dropping it. The flag can be captured by taking it to a tower that your faction controls and crossing over a capture point marked by a metal circle on the ground. Each flag capture grants an amount of resources depending on the number of towers your faction controls:<br />
1 Tower or Ruin controlled = 75 Victory Points per flag capture<br />
2 Towers or Ruins controlled = 85 Victory Points per flag capture<br />
3 Towers or Ruins controlled = 100 Victory Points per flag capture<br />
4 Towers or Ruins controlled = 500 Victory Points per flag capture<br />
Teams also acquire resources at a rate that scales with the number of towers they control. Blizzard introduces a new capture mechanic in Eye of the Storm which is also evident in several world PvP objectives in Burning Crusade &#8212; strength in numbers. Points in Eye of the Storm can be captured through proximity, with the number of players expediting the capture timer. In order to capture a point of interest, players simply need to be near the objective. A MOUNTAIN was once aion power leveling greatly buy agitated. That is to say, if there are equal numbers of Horde and Alliance within the proximity of a point, it will be a stalemate and control will not change. The moment one side has more players than the other, control begins to shift towards the numerically superior faction. An advantage of 5 players is the fastest a team can capture a point, so there&#8217;s no difference whether you have a party of five or a raid of fifteen sitting by a tower. Assuming there are no enemies in sight, they will convert at the same time. Speaking of being in sight, stealthed players do not count towards the capture of a key point.<br />
As with the flag captures, the more that your team controls, the faster you accrue resources:<br />
1 Tower or Ruin controlled = 1 Victory Point per second<br />
2 Towers or Ruins controlled = 2 Victory Points per second<br />
3 Towers or Ruins controlled = 5 Victory Points per second<br />
4 Towers or Ruins controlled = 10 Victory Points per second<br />
The four points of interest in the game are the Mage Tower, Draenei Ruins, Fel Reaver Ruins, and Blood Elf Tower located at the Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast areas of the map, respectively. These are usually abbreviated on Battleground chat as MT, DR, FR, and BE. The Horde start the game on a rock in the Southern end of the map while the Alliance start up North. Each of these locations also grant a nearby Graveyard where players from the controlling faction can resurrect. Teams that don&#8217;t control any points respawn in their elevated starting area.</p>

My editors (I like to imagine them as an old Marvel Comics cosmic entity like The Living Tribunal) quite rightly point out to me from time to time that with Patch 3.3 so close, we&#8217;re effectively at the end of Wrath of the Lich King and therefore all sorts of new loot will be entering the game. Loot from the new five mans at Ulduar 10/25 quality! Loot from the new raid exceeding all previous iLevels! We&#8217;ll be awash in the best gear we&#8217;ll ever see until Cataclysm drops and we start it all over again. And of course they&#8217;re right. It helps me to accept this if I imagine that cosmic entity spinning a giant head around with different faces on it like Reliquary of Souls. (No, sorry, we didn&#8217;t call it Reliquary of Souls all those weeks just to be corrected by Blizzard. Heck, you guys even brought it back in Icecrown.) The next couple of weeks, however, I&#8217;m going to look not at gear but at itemization itself and how it interacts with shamans. I was inspired by the change to Elemental Mastery, the talent in the elemental combat tree that currently grants 15% crit when activated as well as making your next spell instant cast. On the surface, this doesn&#8217;t look like a bad talent all told, so why would we even want to change it? Because of the way shaman talents and spells interact, an extra 15% chance to crit is somewhat useless to an elemental shaman. Specifically, we&#8217;re talking about Flame Shock and Lava Burst. A TORTOISE, lazily level basking aion in the sun, complained leveling to cheap wow gold the sea-birds of her <a href="http://www.wowpowerleveling.me/">wow power leveling</a> hard fate, that no one would teach her to fly. Because of these two spells and their interaction, elemental shamans can basically crit every eight seconds or so. They can guarantee an Elemental Focus clearcasting state to reduce mana cost by 40%. Stacking crit doesn&#8217;t really do anything for them: they&#8217;re going to crit anyway. Most of the elemental tree has synergy with spell haste in comparison, with abilities like Lightning Mastery and Storm, Earth and Fire already reducing cast time on various spells.<br />
So why does this talent change mean we should discuss itemization for shamans? Well, quite frankly, a great majority of the spell power mail in the game at present has crit and MP5 on it. Crit and MP5 are great for restoration shamans (speaking as a resto shaman, I enjoy both) but we just discussed how elemental can basically enter clearcasting at will (and with talents like Unrelenting Storm, can basically regen mana even while casting, making it even less useful for them): what we end up with is a situation where, within one class we have two specs who use caster mail, but those two specs share almost no gear preferences at all. Haste is good for both, hit is good for elemental (although there are talents like Elemental Precision as well if you&#8217;re very shy on hit) and useless for resto, crit and MP5 are both vastly superior for resto and inferior for elemental.</p>

The internet is a hotbed of faux-mance. Other players seem infinitely more fascinating and attractive than the very real partners sitting just across the room, when seen through the lens of fevered imaginations. Add the spice of risqué chat, the attraction of regular time spent together and a dash of Vent and IMs, and you have the makings of the beginning of the end. Infidelity is an ugly subject, and the Drama Mamas think it&#8217;s best to deal with it in the same manner we advise handling other problem situations: head on, with respect and with firmness. Dear Drama Mamas: Hi, I am a wife and mother who plays WoW. I started playing with my husband over two years ago. I am a stay-at-home mom, so during nap time and after the kids go to bed for the night, I play. My husband plays when he gets home from work until he goes to bed. The raiding guild me and my husband are in is very family-friendly and is full of husband-and-wife teams.<br />
Earlier this year, we had a large group of players join the guild (which me and my husband are officers of). I befriended one of the female players when she and her friends joined after her husband joined. We became fast friends. We talked about our kids and even became friends on Facebook. She never really grouped much with her husband; it was just mainly me and my husband and some of her friends. As we became better friends, she confided in me about the issues between her and her husband. Now, me and my husband had been having our ups and downs, like any healthy couple, and I had noticed that he was acting different after we talked or argued about something. I brushed it off, thinking that, I don&#8217;t know, he was just tired or something. And I then noticed that he and she were spending a lot of time together in game and on Vent. At first, I didn&#8217;t think anything about it. But after a month or so, I started to fell weird about it, and I told him. I said I really feel weird about the time you are spending with her. I mean, he was staying up later then he used to, much later, and was always in Vent when before he was only in Vent when we did a raid or a five-man. He told me that he understood and that he would try to keep it down and that it didn&#8217;t mean anything, that they and us were all friends. Well, I brushed it off for a week or so, thinking I was just being crazy. Since we are officers, I didn&#8217;t want him to just ignore her. Well, things changed for a bit, and then it got really weird. I noticed that he was spending more time outside before he came in after work and that he wasn&#8217;t calling me as much. I brushed that off as a rough work week over and over again. LOL<br />
Well, one day I happened to go to his computer to do something with his character and noticed a whisper from her, and I was floored. I knew then what was going on. They were talking on the phone with each other every day. I checked phone records, and lo and behold, he had been talking and texting her for months. I was heartbroken.<br />
I did not say anything to him until the next day. I just was so upset. I told our guild leader that I was taking a break from game and I would let him know when I was coming back. I then told my husband this the next day. He wanted to know why and I told him. We yelled at each other and we talked for hours. I told him it needed to end. He said he would end it the next day; I said no, tonight. So we went together to his computer and he ended it. She ask if she needed to leave the guild and we both told her no, that we didn&#8217;t want to hurt the guild by her leaving. And here is my question or questions. Do you think I did the right think by not asking her to leave or not leaving myself? Or how do I get over something like this? They never were physically together. We live thousands of miles apart. This was just over the phone and the computer. But they did share things with each other that should have been meant for only me. I was very hurt by this. And since I found out and he ended the affair (that is what I call it), she has been really mopey in guild and raids. They do not talk anymore on the phone, and in game, it is only guild- and raid-related stuff. But she is still stuck on him, and she is almost 10 years older then him. I don&#8217;t understand what I need to do about this. I was just wondering how you would handle this kind of situation. We&#8217;re one step closer to gigantic magical battle axes being viable in modern warfare. Since it&#8217;s a holiday in the States (which I&#8217;m from, although not currently residing in) and because I&#8217;ll take any excuse to gorge myself on turkey flesh and loll around in a swollen food coma (like, say, last week, when I used the fact that I&#8217;d washed red clothing with white clothing and now have a lovely pair of bright pink underwear and I don&#8217;t care if you know) I thought this week we could compile a list of things we, as warriors, can be grateful for. If it&#8217;s really an issue for you, assume it&#8217;s Pilgrim&#8217;s Bounty of something. Anyway, let&#8217;s you and I get our best grateful faces on (that&#8217;s me being grateful up there, in case you couldn&#8217;t tell) and discuss things we as warriors can appreciate. No other ability can be seen to be as iconic and representative of a class (only Death Grip and Totems come close) as the warrior ability to get from point A to point B in order to put point C into something, or prevent point D from going into that helpful person in a leather miniskirt or what have you. This particular trifecta of abilities (especially when talented with abilities like Warbringer or Juggernaut) have really grown on me over the years, and let me not pretend that Charge itself wasn&#8217;t the ability that made me say &#8220;Yes, this is the class for me&#8221; after my brief dalliance with paladinhood. The ability to Charge in combat (or Intercept if you&#8217;re fury) changes that &#8220;Haha, I slowed you and will now freeze you to death from over here&#8221; into a &#8220;Oh sweet Light why is a giant meat and metal thing whacking me in the face&#8221; situation that I find vastly more agreeable. And Intervene? Oh, sweet Intervene, thou makest me get out of the slowing field those stupid guys in TotC 5 cast, thou helpeth me past the bombs before Mimiron, thou help me get in front of the priest when the hunter pulls aggro and waits to feign too long. It&#8217;s even good for PvP, if you can time it just right: I&#8217;ve used it to sheep the guy who was going to sheep my healer with a well times Intervene/Spell Reflect combo. Seriously, I don&#8217;t know how you could not love these guys. Thanks for everything. Shield Slam &#8211; You know, when I first seriously specced heavy prot, back in Vanilla WoW, and got my first taste of Shield Slam, it was good, but not great, like destroying a scale replica of Monticello made entirely from toothpicks. (The best part of writing this column sometimes is waiting to see who gets the references.) Over the years they&#8217;ve beefed it up and made it a trainable ability instead of a talent and now it&#8217;s a very solid damage ability as well as a superlative aggro generation tool (especially with Sword and Board procs for a tank). And it looks and sounds cool. You&#8217;ll never get tired of hearing druids and paladins complain that none of their moves sound as cool as the Shield Slam &#8220;In the FACE KTHWANG&#8221; sound. Arms &#8211; the Protection Tree overhaul gets a lot of praise from the people that overhauled it (well, to be fair, it&#8217;s understandable that they&#8217;re proud of what they accomplished) but while I myself am prot now, and will no doubt talk more about prot and tanking in the future, let us take a moment and be thankful for the Arms tree and its really elegant solution to the &#8220;Oh, crap, they can use two big two hand weapons over in fury now, how do we keep this interesting&#8221; scenario.</p>

Following record entries for IGF&#8217;s Main and Student competition, IGF Mobile organizers are reminding of a December 1st deadline for the third annual festival honoring handheld indie games.<br />
This year&#8217;s competition &#8212; the sister event to the main Independent Games Festival &#8212; will again feature independently-developed handheld games for all mobile devices including Apple&#8217;s iPhone, other cellphone and smartphone OSes, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, and other handheld devices.</p>
<p>Now in its third year, IGF Mobile (part of Think Services, as is this website) has blossomed into a major showcase of the handheld form. Apple&#8217;s App Store created a special Store section just to highlight the IGF-nominated iPhone games from 2009&#8217;s IGF Mobile competition, which included acclaimed titles such as Fieldrunners, Real Racing, Zen Bound and Galcon.</p>
<p>In addition, last year&#8217;s IGF Mobile &#8216;Next Great Mobile Game&#8217; winner Reflection has been signed by Konami for Nintendo DSi.</p>
<p>The overall IGF Mobile winner will be revealed at the IGF Awards Ceremony, which precedes the Game Developers Choice Awards on March 11th, 2010. (Both the IGF Awards Ceremony and the Game Developers Choice Awards are part of the 2010 Game Developers Conference, which takes place in San Francisco&#8217;s Moscone Center in March.) IGF Mobile submissions are still being accepted at the competition&#8217;s official website through December 1, 2009; finalists will be announced in January 2010, and will each receive one pass to attend the 2010 Game Developers Conference. Finalists will compete for $5,000 in prizes, including notable awards for design, art, and technology innovation in mobile game development. There is a villainous mastermind behind all of the events one sees, but it is never quite clear why he does all of the different things he does: surely some of the feints and counterfeints of his deception are completely unnecessary. At the end, when the player has clicked through and viewed all of the evidence, he&#8217;s invited to see a connect-the-dots playing that puts elements in their chronological order. That&#8217;s a bit helpful, but it doesn&#8217;t resolve the fact that this is a bizarre and basically nonsensical plot with no particular theme other than, perhaps, that nothing is what it seems.</p>
<p>The interaction exacerbates the problems, however. If the whole point of the experience is that we understand more when we know more, the failure of the whole project to come together into a sharp, coherent story is a very serious flaw. A good gotcha twist at the end of a movie &#8212; The Usual Suspects, say, or Sixth Sense &#8212; is that it makes an instant sense of everything confusing that came before. With HBO Imagine, the site and its interaction sells itself as being about discovery, about movement towards understanding. To the extent that there&#8217;s a purpose in making this an interactive rather than a traditional-format movie, it is because the act of exploration engages the player more fully, invites him to make and test hypotheses about what is going on. To go to that effort and still not to understand is vexing. And it is effort: it&#8217;s interesting playing with the cubical films, turning them this way and that to see the action from all angles, but it&#8217;s a lot more effort than watching a conventional movie. It&#8217;s easy to imagine the same information presented on a four-way split screen, and the result would have been a lot easier to process.</p>
<p>The only point of presenting the films this way is to force the player/viewer to take action in order to uncover what is initially hidden. The interactivity forces engagement with the content, but the player has only limited control over how much he discovers, and even diligent pursuit of the truth is incompletely rewarded with understanding. <p>One strength of the design is the &#8220;Chart Your Progress&#8221; page, which gives the reader/player a map of the interaction and labels each short film or piece of evidence. That provides a little sense of agency, in that it&#8217;s possible to decide to explore one subplot before another, or attempt to skip down to the end of a subplot in order to understand what everything builds to.</p>
<p>But notice I say &#8220;attempt&#8221;: the labels are often not very revealing of what the contents are really about, and that means that the player&#8217;s one possible form of agency, choosing a route through the story, is rendered meaningless most of the time. Moreover, the sense of involvement and agency slackens even more at the end: all the player can do is click through the last several elements.</p>
<p>With all that, I&#8217;m not saying this project is a failure. It is full of funny moments, and it&#8217;s certainly gotten more attention than most bits of advertising fluff I&#8217;ve come across. I was engaged enough to play with it through to the end. And the cube-facing films really are ingeniously made, with the body language of actors suggesting different things from different perspectives.</p>
<p>No, my real point is this: interactive storytelling &#8212; even when it&#8217;s not meant to be a game &#8212; still needs a game designer. It needs someone who will think about what the reader/player is supposed to do, and what that action means, and how it contributes to the story being told.</p>
